The psychological roots of melancholy

by | Jun 15, 2022 | Head-body scheme, Mind, Symptom Language

In this treatise, we will decode the homeopathic roots of melancholy and depression according to the understanding of Antonie Peppler, the founder of Creative Homeopathy, and her research on symptom language.

According to her understanding, “symptom language” is a form of somatic communication—the “soma,” respectively, the subconsciousness by utilizing the material body tries to express an internal conflict that the individual must become aware of to balance itself. Thus, we composed a list of related homeopathic remedies that respond to this internal disharmony.

Melancholy and depression in homeopathy

From the interpretation of Creative Homeopathy, melancholy and depression are linked to the withdrawal of life energy for various reasons. This tendency leads the individual to refuse enjoyment and zest for life. We wrote a detailed article about the homeopathic point of view regarding depression and presented the most significant reasons for this mental condition.

Homeopathic remedies for Melancholy/ Depression

  • Arsenicum album = Existential anxiety—would rather die than change
  • Calcium carbonicum = Refuse to live, want support
  • Conium maculatum = Have lost touch with one’s basic needs
  • Copaiva = Despise oneself out of exaggerated self-criticism
  • Ignatia Amara = Emotion turned into the opposite by intense repression
  • Nitricum acidum = Desire for hatred and revenge, but which are not formulated
  • Sarracenia purpurea = Being in disgrace, feeling humiliated, not belonging
  • Sepia succus = The longing for harmony, which must correspond to one’s own ideas

The meaning of Sleepwalking/Somnambulism

Repressing one’s own potential leads to symptoms like depression and melancholia. Still, other phenomena can show up in which the unconscious tries to unleash restrained life force and feel that mental imprints have firmly disciplined. During sleep, these potentials can override the rational mind and disregard values like social recognition and security, which are usually more important to the individual than emotional needs and feelings. This can lead to symptoms like sleepwalking or somnambulism.

Homeopathic remedies for sleepwalking/somnambulism

  • Artemesia vulgaris = Desperate struggle for recognition of others
  • Cannabis indica = Suppressed feelings manipulate the conscious perception
  • Kalium bromatum = The life lie of the traditional community
  • Kalmia latifolia = Loyalty compulsion as an obstacle to development
  • Natrium muriaticum = Clinging to what is proven and known
  • Opium papaver somniferum = Boundary between the conscious and the unconscious
  • Silicea = Being mentally dominated, feelings are pushed away due to injury
  • Zincum metallicum = Apparent dignity and discipline instead of feelings

acute stress disorder and nervous breakdowns

Suppose one doesn’t use his life force for healthy self-interests. In that case, the energy can be directed in other “channels” to compensate for lacking happiness usually generated from living one’s own individuality. Taking over others’ responsibilities and exhausting oneself in a derivative of helper syndrome is a common form of compensation that leads to overwhelming stress and breakdowns.

Individuals with acute stress disorder and nervous breakdowns usually force themselves to meet the expectations of the entire environment. Those patients often feel driven and develop little or no reference to themselves. Usually, appreciation from others is more important than one’s own needs and feelings. They don’t want to be and must not be regarded as egoists. Therefore, noble values must be lived against all odds. Nervous breakdowns and acute stress disorders result from overextending the self in fulfilling others’ responsibilities.
